Frank Sinatra one an Oscar for his performance in From Here to Eternity.
There are great movie stars and there are great recording stars but only a select few have been both. We here at ThreeMovieBuffs take a certain pride in making "Greatest Movie" lists. While there are many subjective ways to make a list like that, we thought it would be interesting to base one on something a bit more specific. Therefore everyone on this new list has earned their spot by having had both a number one album (excluding soundtracks) or single on Billboard's top pop music charts AND getting an Oscar nomination for their acting. A mere twelve mortals have accomplished this amazing showbiz feat, and only we rank them...
-
Frank Sinatra: Unsurpassed in terms of body of work, commercial success and iconic stature. Won the 1953 Supporting Actor Oscar for playing the doomed Maggio in From Here to Eternity.
-
Barbra Streisand: The female equivalent of Sinatra. Won the Best Actress Oscar for her movie debut as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl (1968).
-
Judy Garland: She set the stage for Streisand but was an even greater stage performer with a truly electrifying presence. She was robbed of the Oscar for A Star is Born (1954).
-
Bing Crosby: He was to Sinatra what Garland was to Streisand. At the peak of his popularity during WWII he was the most well-known entertainer in the world. Won the Best Actor Oscar for Going My Way (1944).
-
Doris Day: She started out as a popular big band singer with several hit songs in the 40's then went on to become the biggest female box-office star of the 20th Century.
-
Cher: More than anyone else on the list she has kept her music and movie careers separate from each other. Won the 1987 Best Actress Oscar for Moonstruck.
-
Diana Ross: This legendary singer's movie career failed to live up to its promising start. Nonetheless she remains a supreme talent.
-
John Travolta: A major movie star, he owes his number one single to the immense popularity of the movie Grease.
-
Will Smith: The most commercially and critically successful movie star/recording star since Streisand.
-
Bette Midler: She had a great run during the 80's but her ultimate stature as a movie star remains to be seen. She still sells records.
-
Debbie Reynolds: Like Bette Midler she was popular during her day. Singin in the Rain assures her immortality but nobody buys her records anymore.
-
Bobby Darin: A great singer whose reputation has grown in recent years. Like Diana Ross he showed talent as an actor but never fullfilled his potential.
