Looking Ahead at 2004

Looking ahead at 2004, and the first Lord of the Rings free year in quite some time, it appears, at least for now, to be a promising year. We’ll see if Spider-man can make lightening strike twice. We’ll also see if the sword and sandal epic can make another comeback with the Brad Pitt starring Troy and the Colin Farrell starring Alexander.

Using our cinematic crystal ball to look ahead over the next twelve months, we’ve come up with a list of our most eagerly anticipated movies of 2004.

Scott:

#5

Van Helsing
Release Date: May 7th, 2004

Starring: Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale
Jackman plays Van Helsing, but instead of the elderly scientist normally limited to pursuing Dracula, this Van Helsing faces off with the Wolfman and Frankenstein as well. Directed by Stephen Sommers, who brought the fun back to Mummy movies, this looks to be one of the best big budget adventure movies of the year.

#4

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
Release Date: Summer, 2004

Starring: Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Angelina Jolie
Only the actors are real, the sets, and most of the props are all computer generated. Set in a Fritz Lang like Metropolis, Jude Law plays the Sky Captain battling giant robots, with Paltrow as his reporter love interest. Futuristically retro, this one’s either going to be one of the best or the worst of the year, and I can’t wait to find out which it turns out to be.

#3

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Release Date: June 4th, 2004

Starring: The usual Harry Potter Crowd
With Alfonso Cuarón replacing Christopher Columbus and the kids beginning to get a little older, it’s time to see if the movies will get darker as the books have done. Plus, with the absence of Lord of the Rings, this is the place to get your Fantasy Fix this year.

#2

The Incredibles
Release Date: November 5th, 2004

Starring the voices of: Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter
Pixar has yet to put out anything but A-class material, and judging simply by the Teaser Trailer now in theaters, the Incredibles looks to be one of their best yet. Following Toy Story, and Finding Nemo, I’d wait in line to see any movie they release.

#1

Phantom of the Opera
Release Date: December 24th, 2004

Starring: Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum
I’m both dreading and anticipating the release of this film. As a huge fan of the stage show and the Musical Genre in general, it will be good to see this finally done as a movie, but with an untried singer in the lead role, I have to wonder. But eternally optimistic, I’m hoping for the best.

#5

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Release Date: June 4th, 2004

Starring: The usual Harry Potter Crowd
I have not read the books but I have grown somewhat attached to the characters from the movies. I keep waiting for either Harry or Ron to kiss Hermione.

#4

Van Helsing
Release Date: May 7th, 2004

Starring: Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale
The concept is original yet very retro. It will be interesting to see how all of those classic monsters come together in the story.

#3

Spider-Man 2
Release Date: July 2nd, 2004

Starring: Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunts
The first one was the best superhero movie since Superman. I only hope they can keep the momentum going without slipping into campy humor and action.

#2

Passion of the Christ
Release Date: February 25th 2004

Starring: Jim Cazaviel
This Mel Gibson directed pet project is already the most talked about and controversial film of the year. Will it offend Jews or Christians? Will it even be a decent movie considering the awkward release date? It also stars one of my favorite under appreciated actors, Jim Cazaviel.

#1

Troy
Release Date: May 21st, 2004

Starring: Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom
I absolutely love historical epics. One of the first comic books I ever remember reading was one based one the Trojan horse and the battle for Troy. The cast of Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom certainly add to the anticipation.

#5

The Terminal
Release Date: June 18th, 2004

Starring: Tom Hanks, Catherine Zeta-Jones
I really enjoyed Catch Me if you Can and Saving Private Ryan wasn't bad either. So I'll get in line to catch Hanks' and Speilberg's third movie together, although I must admit that the premise doesn't sound like much of a plot.

#1

Troy
Release Date: May 21st, 2004

Starring: Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom
Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom, need I say more.

#3

Kill Bill Vol. 2
Release Date: April 16th, 2004

Starring: Uma Thurman, David Carradine
I loved volume one and since it ended on such a cliffhanger I can't wait to see how it all plays out.

#2

Ocean's Twelve
Release Date: December 10th 2004

Starring: George Clooney and Julia Roberts
I enjoyed Ocean's Eleven more than I expected to but the real reason I'm looking forward to the sequel so much is because of the unconfirmed internet rumor that Barbra Streisand may join the cast, replacing the character played by her exhusband Elliot Gould. We should be so lucky.

#1

The Village
Release Date: July 30th, 2004

Starring: Joaquin Phoenix and Adrien Brody
In my review for Signs last year I wrote that M. Night Shyamalan was my new favorite film-maker. I haven't changed my mind. That's why I am looking forward to his new movie more than to any other upcoming release in 2004. Once again it deals with the supernatural and takes place in Pennsylvania. This time it is set back in 1897 and involves a small village surrounded by woods that are inhabited by mystical creatures. I'm hooked.
