Brothers: The Ideal Hollywood Business Partner.

Working with your brother on a movie seems to be the route to success in Hollywood. Both in front of and behind the camera, Hollywood has a history of brothers who have had long and successfull careers. Something about the dynamics between siblings seems to fit nicely into the Hollywood mold.

Casey Affleck received good reviews for his work in Gone Baby Gone as directed by his big brother Ben. The siblings have worked together in the past with Casey having small roles, while Ben starred, in Chasing Amy and Good Will Hunting.

Andy and Larry Wachowski are so tight as the writing and directing team of The Matrix movies and V for Vendetta that they bill themselves as The Wachowski Brothers. One brother does not garnish more credit than the other. The reclusive team never define what responsibility each brother carries.

Some brothers work as a team with more defined roles. In the case of director Christopher Nolan, he has often looked to his brother Jonathan for screenplays. Christopher has come up with the stories for The Prestige and the Batman Begins sequel, The Dark Knight, but it is Jonathan who has written and is writing the screenplays. Their first major collaboration was Memento, which Christopher wrote the screenplay based on a short story written by Jonathan.

Of course, brothers do not just work behind the cameras in Hollywood. In the tradition of The Marx Brothers and Moe and Curly Howard are the Wayan brothers. They have collaborated on dozens of successful movies such as Scary Movie, White Chicks and Little Man. Whereas oldest brother Keenan has done most of the directing, he also writes, as does Shawn and Marlon. Along with Damon, the Wayan brothers are one of the most successful movie making families in Hollywood today.

The Wilson brothers, Andrew, Owen and Luke have worked on many films together. They collaborated on such movies as Bottle Rocket, Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums. In an interview with James Brady for Parade, Luke Wilson said that his best moviemaking experience was The Wendell Baker Story, in which all three brothers worked on. "...it's special working with them. Not that we have a perfect, harmonic relationship. But we were kids together, got in trouble together, and we are friends. We have similar taste, and we get along."

Perhaps part of what makes brothers such good partners is that there is less worry of hurt feelings. When you're brothers, if someone insults the other brother or disagrees with him, at the end of the day, you're still brothers. That's never going to change and with a lifetime's experience of working and living together, it's much easier to forgive then someone you might just work with at a job for a short time.

I am a conservative. Scott is a moderate. Even with our differences we work pretty damn good together. I am not sure how it works or even why. Perhaps it is something as simple as brothers can trust each other. Like all of the people mentioned above, what we do works for us. I only wish we made as much money doing what we do as all of the other brothers in this article!
